Journal therapy has been growing in popularity in the mental health community. It’s an amazing way to let your frustrations and your successes in a safe place. More than a diary it can potentially help you gain clarity and perspective on your goals and mental health over all!
What Is Journal Therapy?
Journal therapy also known as therapeutic journaling is the process of writing down our thoughts and feelings about our personal experiences. It’s a form of self-reflection and helps us process and sort through events or problems we have been struggling with. It can help us gain perspective and clarity.
It differs from keeping a diary because it’s more than just recording the day’s events. Journaling therapy is more about expressing your internalized emotions, reactions, and thoughts we have in relation to a potentially upsetting or traumatic life event. Unlike a diary, this doesn’t have to go in chronological order. You can keep it as regularly as you like, or just write it when you feel like it. 1
How Does Journaling Therapy Work?
Journaling therapy can increase insight, promote change, and gives you a sense of self. This is great if you don’t like or are not sure how to vocalize your thoughts or feelings. Having prompts to help you gain insight could be helpful and give you an easy way to track your progress. 2

Journal Prompts For Your Journal Therapy
Now on to your prompts. These are simple questions that help you guide your thoughts and reflect on how you’re doing inside. I went into further detail about some of the prompts to give you a better idea of how to answer them and there are some that won’t because it’s pretty self-explanatory. Talk About Your Day – the good the bad and the ugly and how did it make you feel?
What Sparked Joy? – It doesn’t have to be anything big even if it’s just something small like sitting on your couch with your dog.
How/What are you grateful for? – Much like your gratitude jar recall what you’re very grateful that you have.
When I think about my mother/father I feel… – Do they make you happy or sad or indifferent? Explore that a bit more.
Does your job bring you joy? Why Or Why Not? – Pretty self-explanatory, how do you feel about your job or working in general? Would you want to move up in your position, do you like where you’re at, or do you want to move to another field?
What would your younger self think of you? – Think about your kidself would they like you or be proud?
If you were to improve one thing about yourself what would it be? – What’s one thing physically, mentally, or spiritually you want to work on?
How do you spread joy throughout your day?
What’s your biggest life lesson?
What’s your biggest opportunity? – Whether in life business or otherwise.
What do you love about yourself? – What makes you smile when you think about yourself?
What’s one thing you would never change about yourself? – What’s something about you that you hopes never changes?
Where is your happy place? What does it look like?
